Welcome to the babyPHONO research study website

This study is recruiting patients under 3 months already having an echocardiogram at the Jessop Wing hospital as part of their normal clinical care. They are eligible for the study if a clinician has heard a heart murmur, or if the baby has previously had an echocardiogram that showed a structural heart defect.

Participants are also being recruited who are undergoing a standard newborn infant physical examination (NIPE). This is to understand whether we can obtain recordings of heart sounds of good enough quality during the NIPE to be analysed by an automated algorithm. The purpose of this arm of the study is to gain insights from clinicians undertaking the NIPE about the process of obtaining these recordings, by gathering questionnaire data from both carers and clinicians about their experience of this process. This will inform how the recording of heart sounds could be best incorporated within the NIPE in the future.

This study is an observational feasibility study, that does not change the clinical care of the babies.
